What is a custom orthotic?

A custom foot orthotic is a prescribed orthopaedic device designed to aid or improve the function of the feet or lower limbs. By altering the position of the foot, we can redistribute pressure off certain areas of the foot as well as the knees, hips, and back. The orthotic type will vary from person to person. There are several different materials used in fabrication depending on the pathological needs of the client.

If the certified pedorthist determines that a foot orthotic is an appropriate treatment option during your assessment, then the patient is casted with plaster in a non-weight bearing subtalar neutral joint position. Other methods may also be used depending on the clinical assessment and requirements of the patient’s condition.

The orthotics are then custom fabricated from these casts. Molds are poured and modified to correct joint position. During the fitting appointment, the device is applied and fine-tuned for exact fit and comfort. Follow-up appointments are encouraged and if further modifications are required, they are completed on-site.

Answers to your frequently asked questions.

  • A Pedorthist will use their assessment of your lower limb anatomy and function to design, fit and modify your custom foot orthotics and /or orthopedic footwear.

  • The lifespan of a foot orthotic varies from patient to patient. The materials used to make the foot orthotic, the patient’s foot structure, levels of activity, age, and physical condition all impact the orthotic’s lifespan.

The lifespan of a foot orthotic should not be measured by when the cover material wears out but by how long the orthotic meets the foot’s changing needs for support, correction, and pressure redistribution. If your symptoms begin to return it is a good idea to have your orthotic reassessed to determine if modifications or a new device is necessary.

  • A shoe acts as a foundation for the foot and provides a stable base for the foot orthotic. Wearing appropriate footwear is imperative, as the footwear itself is an important treatment method. A foot orthotic can be rendered less effective if it is placed in inferior footwear as the shoe may work against the features of the orthotic. The foot orthotic is only as good as the shoe it goes into.

  • Most people can benefit from a foot orthotic. From discomfort in the foot to severe problems such as diabetes and arthritis, a foot orthotic can help a wide range of patients. A detailed assessment from a footwear and orthotic expert, such as a Canadian Certified Pedorthist, can confirm if a foot orthotic will assist a patient with a particular foot, leg, or even back problem.

  • Many third-party insurance plans have coverage for custom foot orthotics from Canadian Certified Pedorthists. All plans across Canada differ so it’s important to look into the specifics in your own plan to confirm your coverage. You will want to review who can refer for foot orthotics and the price range covered. If your insurance plan covers pedorthic services, you will need to visit your healthcare provider and ask for a prescription.

We do not directly bill insurance companies however, we will provide all necessary paperwork for submission at your fitting appointment.
